Farm Animal Words Reading Kit

This reading kit has been designed to assist you in teaching sight reading skills to your child with Down syndrome. It consists of a book called My Farm Animal Book, a double set of flashcards, and an instruction booklet called Steps to Reading with Farm Animal Words.

A form of multi-level teaching has been incorporated into the Farm Animal Words Reading Kit, so that your child progresses in his reading from single words to sentences. In the first step, your child learns to read single words - the names of the animals. In the next step, your child learns the three sight words - this, is, a. Then he can read the first sentence on each page in the book. In the final step, your child learns 4 new words per page. He will then be able to read each page of My Farm Animal Book.

MY FARM ANIMAL BOOK introduces 10 commonly known farm animals. The pages are uncluttered with only one simple animal photograph per page, large enough to hold your child's interest. 4 new words are incorporated into each new page of the text, with words from the previous pages being reinforced. The print is large and easy to read. This book contains a total reading vocabulary of 57 words.

The KEY to this reading kit is the use of a double set of FLASH CARDS.

The Animal Word Flashcards are used to teach the 10 animal words. There are

two sets of cards. One set has just the animal word. The other set has the animal word on one side and a picture of the animal on

the opposite side.

The Sight Word Flashcard Pages are to be cut into flashcards as your child's reading vocabulary grows. Each new word is printed twice on good quality cardstock, with 4 new words per page.

STEPS TO READING WITH FARM ANIMAL WORDS is a 12 page instruction booklet which explains how to teach reading with the Farm Animal Words Reading Kit. It presents the Three Point Lesson, a method for teaching sight words involving matching, identifying and naming the words, based on the book "Teaching Reading to Children with Down Syndrome" by Pat Oelwein (Woodbine House Publishing).

Also included are instructions for playing games using the flashcards, as well as ideas for using the Farm Animal Words Reading Kit as a springboard for further learning.
