Why Sight Reading?

For a child with Down syndrome, learning to read can be a challenge.  In order to best help him learn to read, it is important to teach in the way he learns best. Since most children with Down syndrome are visual learners, the best way to teach reading is to first teach him to read sight words.  When a child with Down syndrome learns to sight read, it gives him a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. It also provides a good foundation for later phonics instruction, as he will have learnt many foundational reading skills - that reading happens from left to right, that groups of letters represent words, and that sentences begin with capitals and end with periods.

What Others are Saying About Farm Animal Words Reading Kit

"Charis (age 7) and I enjoyed (still enjoy) the book very much. I appreciated the method of building and repetition of words. The pictures were realistic and colorful. Actually, she took to the book right away. We had already been flashing some of the words, and she loves animals (high interest always works better). My only complaint is that it is not one of a series! I've been waiting for the next one to be announced!"      Susan, Kentucky

"I think the format was just right. I like the idea that you build upon previously learned words each page. Having cards for all the words is good, too. Since sight reading seems to be a good beginning, easier for ds children to grasp, it gives the child a feeling of accomplishment - 'I can read!!' "                  Maureen,  North Dakota

"I think it’s wonderful! It follows the method that Pat Oelwein describes in her book which we have used with Michael (age 11) successfully. The words you chose are very common “first” words, and the farm animal subject is always an interest to young children whether they live in the country or not. Including the flash cards with the words takes the work out of having to make them yourself. And the price is reasonable!"            Debbie,  Oregon

"We received your book in the mail yesterday. We love it! It's just great, and Micah (age 6) is excited about learning the words. It is wonderful to have such a beautiful resource ready to work with. It is so helpful in learning how to teach, too. Thank you again!!"                                                                                                               Fran,  Alberta
About Us
We are John and Diane Ryckman, and we live with our 8 children in the Creston Valley of British Columbia, Canada.  We love the LORD and are thankful that we have been able to  homeschool each of our children.  We were introduced to special needs homeschooling with the birth of our 6th child, Andrew, who just happens to have Down syndrome.

Since Andrew's birth, I (Diane) have had a dynamic interest in learning how to teach and encourage children with Down syndrome.  Over the past few years I have found that, though there are a number of excellent resources explaining "how to" teach children with Down syndrome, there are very few materials designed especially for children with Down syndrome.  As a result, I have begun developing my own materials to use with Andrew.  These I am making available to you.  I trust you will find them helpful.
